Why you keep making me cry, Star Wars? Why?

We’ve been teased at the finale for The High Republic’s first phase and have been worried about our new favorite characters ever since。 Claudia Gray brings us The Fallen Star and gives us an epic, breathtaking, personal story that focuses on its characters in that magic way that only Claudia Gray can。 The book stands together with Light of the Jedi and The Rising Storm to continue the storytelling and bring our first phase of The High Republic to a conclusion。So what’s in store for our Jedi and We’ve been teased at the finale for The High Republic’s first phase and have been worried about our new favorite characters ever since。 Claudia Gray brings us The Fallen Star and gives us an epic, breathtaking, personal story that focuses on its characters in that magic way that only Claudia Gray can。 The book stands together with Light of the Jedi and The Rising Storm to continue the storytelling and bring our first phase of The High Republic to a conclusion。So what’s in store for our Jedi and friends and the Nihil’s newest plans?A WHOLE LOT。What do the Jedi fear? Since the inception of this project and the creators talking about this core theme, I’ve been very worried。 A lot of those themes are built on in a huge way in this book。 So much of the tension and unease that’s been building since the events of The Rising Storm reaches a breaking point here。 The story is heavy with pain and loss but also with hope and unity。 I love this book even though it broke my heart multiple times。This is a must-read for every High Republic reader ready to face the pain of loss。 But like any great Star Wars in its darkest moment, we see hope。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Has a strong beginning, but is bogged down by concentrating probably more than 2/3 of the book to the destruction of Starlight Beacon。 Obviously, not an event to gloss over, but I found the pacing to be all over the place。 Doesn't help that I just don't feel invested in any of these new characters and can't keep them straight。 Not sure I'll continue reading any of The High Republic stuff, but we'll see。Overall, not my cup of tea。 Not a horrible book, but not one I'll really remember。 Has a strong beginning, but is bogged down by concentrating probably more than 2/3 of the book to the destruction of Starlight Beacon。 Obviously, not an event to gloss over, but I found the pacing to be all over the place。 Doesn't help that I just don't feel invested in any of these new characters and can't keep them straight。 Not sure I'll continue reading any of The High Republic stuff, but we'll see。Overall, not my cup of tea。 Not a horrible book, but not one I'll really remember。 。。。more

This was an intensely frustrating experience。 It seems unconnected from the larger narrative in the way that a news report of a single disaster is unconnected from the impact of the disaster。 I did not like the characters, even the ones like Elzar Mann and Reath Silas that I have liked in other books。 Author Claudia Gray uses parentheses freely (and unnecessarily) to the point of distraction (and to the detriment of the book)。 For example。 Gray also seems obsessed with justifying the character o This was an intensely frustrating experience。 It seems unconnected from the larger narrative in the way that a news report of a single disaster is unconnected from the impact of the disaster。 I did not like the characters, even the ones like Elzar Mann and Reath Silas that I have liked in other books。 Author Claudia Gray uses parentheses freely (and unnecessarily) to the point of distraction (and to the detriment of the book)。 For example。 Gray also seems obsessed with justifying the character of Geode, the rock-person, even writing a diatribe about Geode’s deep personality that only shallow people don’t understand。 It feels like Gray doesn’t take the source material seriously enough to treat it for adults。 Still, Gray has a command of atmosphere that works well in what is essentially The Poseidon Adventure In Space。 It’s not enough to save the book。 The entire High Republic experiment has been unfocused, disrespectful of the source material, and tone deaf to the fan base。 I want to know how this story concludes, but I’ll be exceedingly glad to see the back of it。 。。。more

When I see it has taken me 10 weeks to finish a book, it really means something。 I kept finding other things to do, once and again。 Only when I hit the 50% mark did it get slightly better。。。 Read only if you're a Star Wars completist。 When I see it has taken me 10 weeks to finish a book, it really means something。 I kept finding other things to do, once and again。 Only when I hit the 50% mark did it get slightly better。。。 Read only if you're a Star Wars completist。 。。。more

Tragic。 What a disappointing end to a trilogy that started out with impressive innovations in the Star Wars universe。 When the High Republic was first announced I was very skeptical, but Light of the Jedi surpassed all expectations。 The Rising Storm bridged the middle arc of the trilogy so well。 And then this book was just such a let down。 The 24 page picture book summarizes things pretty darn well。 Even Marc Thompson’s impeccable narration couldn’t save this one。 Womp womp。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This series can be fun at times, but this one was a disappointment despite how much was going on。 Also, while the narrator can be really solid in his deliveries, his use of excitement in his voice during periods of tension and combat just feels false and forced。

For a book about samurai in space who have magical powers this book lacks much action。 The story was fun enough but you can feel the claws of Disney ensuring this series will extend for many more years。 Also Into the Dark and the main comic/graphic novel line are near essential reading for this book, which is great if you want to read everything High Republic, but if you're not into that I can see it would be frustrating。 The lack of Avar in this book to save the comic storyline is certainly a b For a book about samurai in space who have magical powers this book lacks much action。 The story was fun enough but you can feel the claws of Disney ensuring this series will extend for many more years。 Also Into the Dark and the main comic/graphic novel line are near essential reading for this book, which is great if you want to read everything High Republic, but if you're not into that I can see it would be frustrating。 The lack of Avar in this book to save the comic storyline is certainly a bold choice by the team。 。。。more

Not bad, although I feel like each of these High Republic novels have been essentially the same story; Step 1: Sense of foreboding as the stupid Jedi continue to ignore obvious signs of danger。 Step 2: Poop hits the fan and everything goes terribly; several newly introduced characters die, oh no! Step 3: Jedi barely eek out a Phyrric victory while the Nihil (who somehow are more powerful than any adversary ever faced) get away。 And somehow this wasn’t the last one?

The first 40% of the book is REALLY slow, but then it picks up。 It’s fine。 It’s a nice little adventure。 Pacing problems all around, but, you know, fine。

Somewhat slow to get moving, plot-wise, this feels more like a necessary preci for something larger to come。

Though excellently written and filled with both excitement and tragedy, the tunnel-vision of its setting hampers the expansive escapism that makes STAR WARS what it is。

The High Republic adult novels have gotten harder to read with each successive instalment。 THE FALLEN STAR is slow and frustrating, lacking the scope (and even fun) of its predecessors and replacing them with a focused and significantly darker tale。 The final act is exciting albeit predictable, and the future seems bleak for the story to come, but this one was mostly a slog to get through。 Countless POVs that swap in a page or two, lots of repetition, and some annoying hand waving of logic throu The High Republic adult novels have gotten harder to read with each successive instalment。 THE FALLEN STAR is slow and frustrating, lacking the scope (and even fun) of its predecessors and replacing them with a focused and significantly darker tale。 The final act is exciting albeit predictable, and the future seems bleak for the story to come, but this one was mostly a slog to get through。 Countless POVs that swap in a page or two, lots of repetition, and some annoying hand waving of logic throughout made this one take nearly two months to read。 I'm still going on, because maybe the backwards time skip coming up with freshen things up a bit, and Star Wars is still dear to me, no matter how much it lets me down at times。 。。。more

As I've said before, The High Republic is the only worthwhile thing Disney has done with Star Wars。 This book is a great addition to the series, and I hope they continue in this vain。 As I've said before, The High Republic is the only worthwhile thing Disney has done with Star Wars。 This book is a great addition to the series, and I hope they continue in this vain。 。。。more

A solid setup to a finale for the the mainline High Republic series。 While I enjoy Claudia Gray’s writing the most out of new Star Wars authors, this one lacked the wit and charm Bloodlines and her other novels had。 The focal point is excellent though I do think the book stretches it’s single location a bit thin between the cast。 Speaking of cast, everyone is here making the jumps between view points more jarring than the last but at least they’re all centralized in the same location。

The hollowness of "The High Republic" campaign is on full display here, as the third flagship novel just repeats the same basic narrative of its predecessors (basically a Star Wars "Airport" story where a huge cast of characters confront a major disaster in the making) and repeats even the same character arcs that we saw in the second novel。 It is just treading water here。 Apparently the next phase of the campaign is a prequel, so I am not sure when this series' wheels will turn, or even if they The hollowness of "The High Republic" campaign is on full display here, as the third flagship novel just repeats the same basic narrative of its predecessors (basically a Star Wars "Airport" story where a huge cast of characters confront a major disaster in the making) and repeats even the same character arcs that we saw in the second novel。 It is just treading water here。 Apparently the next phase of the campaign is a prequel, so I am not sure when this series' wheels will turn, or even if they ever will turn。 Sadly, this is probably the better written flagship novel, with Gray fleshing out some of the more interesting non-Jedi characters, but even that cannot paper over the feeling the architects of this story are just recycling their ideas。 。。。more

Not quite as good as light of the Jedi simply because it didn't have a ton of new nihil intrigue and only included a few of my favorite characters, but overall very enjoyable。 Not quite as good as light of the Jedi simply because it didn't have a ton of new nihil intrigue and only included a few of my favorite characters, but overall very enjoyable。 。。。more

I give this book a low 3。5/5。 It's head and shoulders above the other two books of the series so far, thanks to Gray's writing, but it often loses the central conflict in the massive web of characters, which had been a flaw throughout the series。 I'm not sure that I'll continue with the series with Cavan Scott returning to the helm, but this was a decent read, overall。 I give this book a low 3。5/5。 It's head and shoulders above the other two books of the series so far, thanks to Gray's writing, but it often loses the central conflict in the massive web of characters, which had been a flaw throughout the series。 I'm not sure that I'll continue with the series with Cavan Scott returning to the helm, but this was a decent read, overall。 。。。more
